New Latin blog...

Post Cato Tue Dec 11, 2007 2:19 am

Just thought I'd let everyone know...

I've started a blog on Latin and related topics. It's not completely done, and I'm not sure what I'll do with it yet, but if you're interested check it out at:

http://www.latinlanguage.us

Like I said it is definitely a work in progress, but I thought I'd share it now, incomplete as it is. I'm probably start taking it more seriously in the new year. Thx:-)

Great Cato! Looks good.

I have one criticism, however. I'm not entirely fond of your translation from Quintillian; I'm fine with loose translations, but I think you removed one significant part of the original text from your translation. The detail that I think you missed is at the beginning; here's my translation up to that point:
He who knows what should be said and how it should be said...

Other than that it looks great. For students, the quoque is not "also" (I made this error initially); it is quo + -que, an interrogative used in the indirect question, referring to modo.
Any translations provided here are subject to the forum disclaimer, which is at http://latinforum.org/viewtopic.php?t=34
Before you post a request, please post an introduction, which you can do at http://latinforum.org/viewforum.php?f=3

Absolutely correct; I should have proofread better...

Oh that's neat! And to think I was rather oblivious to how much Latin there was on the internet just yesterday! This forum is great. I'll be keeping an eye on your blog.

How are you declining blogem, exactly? Like vox? I was thinking of blogum -i n., myself. I've been using ephemeris interretialis.

This was merely the product of an on-the-spot Latinization: blog, blogis was simply the first think that popped in my head. I really like your ephemeris interretialis, by the way. Maybe it can be abbreviated (as blog < weblog) too - epheretis ???

Perhaps just ephemeris could work by itself.

Blogis -is m. (cf. ignis) sounds better to me because it avoids the unnatural final -g. The verb could be blogire (cf. ignire), and its agent nouns would be blogitor and blogitrix.

Looks very good. I am impressed :)

Just one question, though: are you sure you want to keep linking here with the tag "Akela's Latin Forum"? Starting the forum aside, this place has been built by those participating in discussions - which cannot be done by anyone alone.

Cato, did you notice that your blog is being linked to in the external section of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contemporary_Latin ?

This is a big achievement for a website, to be listed as an external resource by Wikipedia :applause:

This very website is also in the external links for the Wikipedia entry on Contemporary Latin if you had noticed.
I am also known as Iohannes Aureus (John the Golden), though Aurum is used as my surname as Gold
